Chapter 18

Annie

The setting sun stretches our shadows out across the horizon.

I don’t know how long we’ve been riding for – I’ve lost all track of time -- but with my face buried in Troye’s back and the open desert providing a magical view, I can’t think of anything other than the two of us.

As it gets darker out, though, a knot starts to form in my stomach. Doubt starts to creep into my mind.

What the hell am I doing?

A coyote howls in the distance and I remember why I’ve never wondered so far from my safe little hometown.

I’m a coward...

Troye slows down and turns off the flat, empty highway onto a dirt road. Sand flies up around us and I dig my hands deeper into his hard body. My seat rattles and shakes and tinges of fear occupy my joints. Slowly, though, that fear is replaced by something else. Troye slows down even further and the gentle rumble of the seat between my legs awakes a feeling that I had completely forgotten about...

Lust.

There was no one back in Little Hill to arouse such thoughts in a young woman. Every potential partner had left, leaving only the old and the despicable. I wasn’t much younger than officer Dan, but I’d rather have served life in prison that ever see him with anything more than disgust.

Troye’s different, though. He was always the golden boy. Smart, athletic and handsome beyond the confines of our little town. Every passing tourist would give him a second look, maybe that’s where he got his taste for something more. I don’t know. All I know is right now, my lady parts are going wild.

Troye’s backside vibrates against the tip of my pelvis. I wrap my arms just below his hulking chest. His hard stomach rises and falls with every breath he takes. I have to call upon every ounce of willpower I can muster just to keep from swaying in my seat. I want nothing more in this entire world right now than to satiate my lust.

I’ve tried my best to forget about Troye. It’s been hard, but I managed to consciously rid myself of his memory. Still, my unconscious mind had other ideas. I often wake up at night drenched after a dirty dream about the two of us.

The dream I’m currently in, though, has the potential to top them all. I peak over Troye’s rumbling shoulder and see a base camp of tents littering the desert ahead. A magnificent butte rises up just behind the shelter. I stare up in awe as Troye slows to a stop.

“What do you think?” he asks, stepping off his bike. He helps me off and we hold hands and watch the sun make its final descent. The horizon glows like an atomic bomb and the sky above us is already sparkling with a brilliant display of stars.

I have eyes for something else, though. I’m going wild.

I don’t let my gaze leave Troye.

“Beautiful,” I whisper.
